When philosopher Gaston Bachelard contrasts day reveries with night dreams, he observes that the “I” of nocturnal dreams remains a stranger. So much so that we might say “A dream visited me”. He cites Paul Valéry's observation that dreams are formed “by some other sleeper, as if at night they mistake the absent person”.
